The Clinical Education Specialist ED/ICU leads the educational activities for emergency and critical care nursing .

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates educational programs and projects, to support unit/service line goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Demonstrates expertise in areas of clinical practice, by participating in patient care to identify opportunities for improvement, assess staff performance, and facilitate implementation of new practices.

* Conducts the orientation, education, competence and training activities assigned units.

* Collaborates with colleagues at the entity and Network level to develop and implement curriculum associated with new technologies, procedures and other patient-care related activities congruent with the mission and goals of patient care services.

* Collaborates with patient, family, and health care professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

* Demonstrates expertise in the teaching/learning process to improve clinical practice and system processes.

* Develops, implements, and evaluates standards of care throughout the illness/wellness continuum.

* Facilitates quality improvement activities by gathering evidence-based information related to advances in clinical practice and makes recommendations for change.

* Utilizes research to support and advance nursing practice, enhance an integrated approach to care, and improve patient care outcomes.

* Functions as a project leader, consultant and mentor; serves as chair or is an active participant on assigned committees.

* Maintains appropriate records.

* Participates in the development of policies and procedures.

* Demonstrates an awareness of evaluating quality and cost/benefit outcomes.

* Participates in activities that promote professional growth and development.

* Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.

* Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

* Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).

* Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

* Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

* Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

* Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 4 hours per day; 2 hours at a time. Stand for up to 6 hours per day; 3 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 20 minutes at a time. Frequently use hands and fingers. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 50 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed, and/or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION:

Registered Professional Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required; Master's Degree in Nursing, Education or related field preferred. Certification as BLS, ACLS and PALS; instructor preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Three years clinical experience in an acute setting required. Previous experience in the clinical specialist role/nursing education preferred. Demonstrated success in evaluating quality and cost outcomes highly desirable. Works well in a changing environment. Challenged by work diversification.
