POSITION SUMMARY:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer isresponsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment,and for performing and communicating results of diagnosticexaminations using sonography. The Diagnostic MedicalSonographer is responsible for daily operations of the ultrasounddepartment, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report ofequipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The technologistmaintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and isself-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge ofthe field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Responsiblefor interacting with hospital staff and/or nursing departmentsregarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying andassisting in the resolutions. Routinely works weekdays,weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, overtime, and/or on-call statuswhen needed. Will also be subject to assigned responsibilitiesin other departmental areas and /or other system wide facilities asneeded with departmental head approval and appropriate training anddirection as may be appropriate to the task. Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must demonstrate commitment and adherence toSTHS's Compliance Program and Code of Conduct throughcompliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct,attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspectedcompliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.

Education

* Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program orCardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs(CAAHEP) is desirable.

* Bachelor or Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic MedicalSonography or Cardiovascular Technology is desirable.

* Current compliance with ContinuingMedical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) asappropriate.

RequiredLicenses/Certifications

* Currently licensed as an MRT or Certified by the AmericanRegistry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or possess the ARRT inSonography (S) or

* ARDMS/ARRT (S) registry eligible and must obtain thecertification within first year of hire.or

* Currently licensed as an MRT, ARRT (R) and have at least5 yrs experience in Ultasound

* Must have and maintaincurrent CPR certification, according to unit specific needs. Certification must be in accordance with the curriculum of the AHA,for Healthcare Provider's Program.

Experience

* Atleast one year experience in abdominal, small parts, neurosonologyand OB/GYN studies is desirable.

* Bilingual (English, Spanish) status is desirable

* Ability to effectively operate sonographic equipment.

* Ability to evaluate sonograms in order to acquire appropriatediagnostic information.

* Ability to integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results,patient history and medical records, and adapt sonographicexamination as necessary.

* Ability to use independent judgment to acquire the optimumdiagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.

* Ability to evaluate, synthesize, and communicate diagnosticinformation to the attending physician.

* Ability to communicate effectively with the patient and thehealth care team, recognizing the special nature of examinations andpatient's needs.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with the public and health care team.

* Ability to follow established departmental procedures.

* Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergencysituations

EssentialFunctions

* Performs clinical assessment and diagnosticsonography examinations.

* Uses cognitive sonographic skills toidentify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical,pathological, diagnostic information and images.

* Uses independent judgment during thesonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal andpathologic findings.

* Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographicinformation and medical history, and communicates findings to theappropriate physician.

* Coordinates work schedule with DepartmentalDirector and/or scheduling desk to assure workload coverage.

* Assumes responsibility for the safety, mentaland physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer'scare.

* Assists with the daily operations of thesonographic laboratory.

* Maintains a daily log of patients seen /completes exam billing forms.

* Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area,and maintains adequate supplies.

* Participates in the maintenance of laboratoryaccreditation.

* Establishes and maintains ethical workingrelationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospitals,referral or commercial agencies.

* Performs other work-related duties asassigned.

* Performs all requested examinations asordered by the physician.

* Prepares preliminary reports and contactsreferring physicians when required, according to establishedprocedures.

* Coordinates with other staff to assureappropriate patient care is provided.

* Addresses problems of patient care as theyarise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.

* Organizes daily work schedule and performsrelated clerical duties as required.

* Assumes responsibility for the safety andwell-being of all patients in the area/department.

* Reports equipment failures to the appropriatesupervisor or staff member.

* Provides in-service education team onrequirements of sonographic procedures as requested by other membersof the health care team.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.
