The Category Manager (CM) reports to the Director of Indirect Procurement and leads all global Procurement efforts across the Corporation on Laboratory, Factory and Office Supplies within the allocated spend responsibility. They will be accountable for the creation, development and execution of Category Strategies within the assigned scope of responsibility (including mitigating environmental impact, opportunity analysis, sourcing project management, achievement of savings targets, Value capture administration, supplier management, robust and competitive sourcing, demand management and process optimization).

The Category Manager develops strong working relationships within the Procurement team and with key functional stakeholders from core business functions (Business Units and Operating Functions such as Engineering, Finance, Quality, Regulatory, Operations and Supply Chain).

The Category Manage also ensures that they provide effective, professional internal and external communications that enable input to, and compliance with, Category Strategies. They will achieve success through the flow of information into a comprehensive knowledge base to provide guidance for best-in-class Procurement activities globally. They also are expected to utilize best Procurement practices in order to efficiently and enable Business Units and functional partners to maximize their Value and exceed their objectives.

  • Adheres to and promotes the Global Procurement Organization (G.P.O.) model in all aspects
  • Collates and interprets internal stakeholder, supplier, market and internal business data and information for the assigned categories in scope, and provides in-depth input and validation to the global Category Strategy, including facilitating involvement of senior stakeholders
  • Work with G.P.O. members and the Business Units to ensure the effective execution of Category Strategies and local negotiations as necessary
  • Ensures alignment with Finance business partners throughout the Value opportunity assessment and execution process
  • Incorporates environmental and sustainability principles in all sourcing and procurement activities
  • Formulates and drives Strategic Sourcing initiatives
  • Creates detailed negotiation plans and conducts effective negotiations
  • Creates an environment of continual Value creation with a world class supply base
  • Identifies and drives cost-savings programs and cost-reduction opportunities
  • Effectively manages risk of non-supply of materials through sourcing strategy and contracting
  • Ensures contractual arrangements follow an agreed policy, process and governance for negotiations, contract approval and execution and adhere to established procurement policies
  • Leadership in Supplier Relationship Management including Supplier Performance and Supplier Development programs
  • Manages strategic supplier relationships, including support of key supplier performance management systems (scorecards), associated supplier performance review schedules and reporting of supplier performance against goals
  • Makes recommendations for Alternate Supplier Qualifications
  • Coordinates supply disruption response and produces management reports
  • Minimizes the working capital of the company without jeopardizing manufacturing
  • Develops and maintains a rolling 3-5 year program of procurement projects
  • Facilitates sales by driving reciprocal trade agreements and bringing supplier innovation into the Corporations product pipeline
  • Generates business case reports to record projects which create value for AMRI
  • Ensures Key Performance Indicators and Key Results Indicators are met or exceeded
  • Provides leadership of cross-functional teams across other business functions and initiatives
  • Establishes and maintains a Communication Plan for information flows to and from all stakeholders
  • Establishes a cadence of internal and external meetings in line with the Communication Plan
  • Ensures sourcing is conducted on a global scale to create value from suppliers and for customers
  • Minimizes the total costs of ownership for manufacturing whilst maximizing Value to the Corporation
  • Critiques & Evaluates methods of manufacture ensuring the minimization of joint costs
  • Provides management reports as requests
  • Utilizes eSourcing in the relevant circumstances to drive value for the Corporation
  • Maintains the highest levels of professionalism both at the AMRI sites and with suppliers at their sites
  • Demonstrates leadership in the observance of site safety requirements
  • Conducts business with the highest level of integrity ensuring compliance with the AMRI Code of Ethics and Business Conduct
  • Communicates proactively and effectively with all relevant functions and personnel
  • Conducts training in Procurement tools and techniques to those in the Corporation who require it
  • Ensures annual operating activities are undertaken within the allocated budget and provides timely reporting to the Director of Indirect Procurement as required
  • Provides cover for the Director of Direct Materials Procurement during periods of absence or vacation if required
  • Support the global development and standardization of core category management infrastructure (Processes / Systems / Tools) and drive adoption across the assigned category(s) to improve procurement efficiency, performance and compliance
  • Train and coach G.P.O staff (and project related resources as appropriate)
  • Coach stakeholders and internal customers on Category Management, Strategic Sourcing and Procurement management processes, policies and systems
  • Travel: 10 – 25% of time, International travel required


  • Bachelor’s Degree or above is required; advanced business degree, such as an MBA is preferred
  • 5 years of experience with Sourcing and Procurement roles with demonstrated success with in-depth strategic and operational sourcing and procurement management, a demonstrated working knowledge of category management, and demonstrated leadership experience throughout the life cycle of category strategy development and implementation
  • In-depth knowledge of Strategic Sourcing and Category Management, specific to the area of laboratory and factory supplies is preferred
  • Experience in the Pharmaceutical or Life Sciences Industries or in Management Consulting is preferred
  • Recognized qualification in Procurement (CIPS, CPM, or similar) is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability in negotiation preparation and execution
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within a global matrix environment; within often ambiguous and complex business situations
  • Proven financial/business acumen (e.g. Financial flows, definitions, Total Cost of Ownership, ROI & Cost Modeling)
  • Proven change management leadership and influencing skills with direct experience in delivering business process change
  • Proven capability in negotiation, contract life cycle management, and related stakeholder management
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in project management and risk assessment and management
  • Practical knowledge of analytical techniques in Procurement
  • Demonstrated aptitude and proficiency in basic business management tool e.g. MS Office suite and sourcing and procurement related business systems (ERP/ MRP in Oracle or SAP, e-procurement, e-sourcing, contract management, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Exceptional time management, organization and prioritization skills
