This is specialist work in the City's summer Arts and Crafts program.

An employee in this class develops, supervises, and instructs a summer recreation Arts and Crafts program.

Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or independently under general supervision.

Characteristic Work

Develops, supervises and instructs activities for persons engaged in recreation arts and crafts programs. Ensures programs are conducted in an orderly fashion; maintains staff and participant safety. Ensures appropriate conduct from participants. Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding all activities and sites. Maintains open and positive communication with participants and visitors. Responds to public inquiries about programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings. Provides information regarding programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other city departments and the general public. Prepares a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, and flyers. Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs. Collects fees associated with programs. Assists in recruiting, organizing, and coordinating volunteer staff. Plans and participates in publicizing programs and in stimulating participation. Assists in coordinating, scheduling, and supervising City and Community Learning Center recreation facilities; ensures proper use of facilities by recreation groups. Required to work some evening and weekend hours, tournaments, evening leagues, special events, skill or other major recreation or City sponsored events. Applies first aid. Conducts safety and maintenance checks of assigned location. May assist with food and beverage preparation. Sets up tables, booths and equipment for events. Performs a variety of miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, and assisting other City divisions as needed. Drives a City vehicle to pick up supplies and run errands. Performs related work as required.

Must be able to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends. Must occasionally perform difficult physical labor such as climbing, bending, kneeling and performing repetitive movements. Must lift weights of over 50 pounds as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of formal participation or instructional experience in Arts and Crafts. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in assigned community recreation program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's applicable experience and his/her general recreation background. List of essential functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position sought.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

Residency and Veterans preference points will be awarded in conformance with the Akron City Charter if the candidate achieves a passing score in the competitive process.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
