Apply online

You can also apply for jobs at Toys R Us directly through their hiring website. If you choose to use this application method, you can always come back to StartWire later on and use our free tools to keep your job search organized.

The Toys R Us Application Process

Before you start the application, you can choose to connect your Facebook or LinkedIn account to the application. If you choose to connect one of your accounts, Toys R Us will pull out some of your profile information (name, employment history, etc), and fill out some of the application fields for you. If you don't have one of those accounts or would prefer not to connect them to Toys R Us, you are free to enter all of your information manually.

You will need to complete the first portion of the application on the Toys R Us hiring website. This section is designed to collect some of your personal information (name, address, phone number, and email address). Once you enter that information, you will be taken to an applicant tracking system (ATS) where you will need to complete the rest of the application.

After you accept the privacy policy and create an account on their ATS, you will have the opportunity to upload your resume. Uploading a resume is not required, but you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity if you have one prepared. It can be hard to stand out through a job application alone, and a well-crafted resume can help with that.

The application

At this point, you're (finally) ready to start the application itself. You will need to provide your name, address, phone number, email address, pay expectations, criminal history, social security number, and date of birth.

From here, you will need to enter your availability (when you can start and what days / hours you can work), your work experience, and your level of education. Note: If you don't have any work experience or previous education, you can remove those requirements by clicking the 'remove' link on the appropriate section.

Assessment

At this point in the application, you will need to take an assessment. The assessment is a series of 58 questions designed to help Toys R Us determine if you would make a good fit for their company.

To give you an idea of what you can expect from the assessment, here are a few sample questions:

"Compared to co-workers or friends, how influential can you be in advising a customer to make a purchase decision?"

"How important is it to you to meet new people on the job?"

"How often do you provide a friendly greeting to others?"

As a general rule, you should do your best to answer each question strongly. Toys R Us would much rather hire someone who would 'definitely' act in a positive way than someone who 'might' act in a positive way. So don't be shy, and don't back down from expressing how you really feel and how you would really behave.

If you're not sure how to answer a particular question, just take a moment to think about why they're asking that question. What are they trying to learn about you?

Background check

By submitting an application to Toys R Us, you give them your permission to perform a pre-employment background check. Any job offers you receive are contingent upon passing the background check.

Drug test

You also must give Toys R Us permission to perform a pre-employment drug screening. Again, any employment offers you receive are contingent upon passing this test.

Finances

Toys R Us is a private company owned by Kohlberg Kravis Robers, Bain Capital, and Vornado Realty Trust. They earned an estimated $13 billion in revenue in 2012.

History

Toys R Us' beginnings came in 1948, when Charles Lazarus opened a baby furniture store called Children's Supermart. Before long, his customers started to ask about baby toys. After stocking his store with baby toys, other customers began asking if he carried toys for older children. In 1957, Lazarus decided that he would change the focus of the store to toys, and renamed it Toys R Us.

In 1966, Lazarus sold Toys R Us to Interstate Department Stores. They maintained ownership until 2005, when the current ownership bought out the company.

Today, there are more than 1,500 Toys R Us stores in the world, and Toys R Us is one of the largest toy distributors on the planet.
