The Hewlett-Packard Application Process

For this application guide, we applied for a position as a User Interface Design Engineer. It is possible that your application experience may vary a little bit from ours depending on the position that you apply for.

Before you can apply for a job at Hewlett-Packard, you will need to create an account on their hiring website. To create an account, you will need to provide your email address, an account password, and an answer to a security question. The registration process is incredibly simple, and will only take a minute of your time.

Once your account is setup, you will have the option to upload your resume. Providing your resume is optional at this point, but uploading it can save you some time. Hewlett-Packard's program will read through your application and use the information that it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. If you aren't comfortable with this or would just prefer to enter your information yourself, that's ok -- you can decline the option and fill in the information manually.

Next, you will have a chance to attach some files to your application. This is the perfect opportunity to upload your resume and cover, and you should make sure to provide both documents. Also, take some time to customize both your cover letter and resume for the position that you are applying for. Not only will this show that you have a real interest in the position, but it will also give you the chance to demonstrate how your experiences have prepared you for the position you're applying for.

Once your resume and cover letter are uploaded, you will need to provide some personal information including your name, home address, phone number, email address, education, work experience, and certifications (if applicable). Before you begin the application, make sure that you have all the information that you will need to complete it (including accurate employment and education start and finish dates). Some employers ask for every piece of information under the sun, but Hewlett-Packard asks for only the most crucial information. This is very appreciated, and it makes them one of the most applicant-friendly companies you'll ever find.

With your personal information entered, you will need to take a short questionnaire. These questions are job-specific. For our position as an interaction designer, we were asked if we could provide a portfolio of work, if we were familiar with certain technologies, and if we were familiar with their project management methodologies. Read each question carefully, and answer honestly. There are no trick questions here.

Before you submit your application, take a little bit of time to read it over and verify that it is mistake-free. When you're happy with it, go ahead and submit it. Good luck!
