If you prefer, you can also search and apply through jobs directly through Petco's hiring website. If you choose this method, you can still track your job applications and organize your job search through StartWire. Below, we've provided you with some tips for filling out your online application.

The Petco Job Application Process

On the Petco career site, they estimate that it will take you about 30 minutes to complete your application. This is probably a fair estimate if you've filled out a ton of job applications before and can just fly through the process, but if you're unfamiliar with the process and like to move deliberately, you will probably spend 45 minutes to an hour completing it. The Petco job application process begins as most do: you'll have to search for jobs based on your location and type of work that you're looking for. You'll only be able to apply for one position at a time, which is too bad if you're qualified and interested in multiple positions within a store. Once you've selected a job that you're interested in, you'll have to create an account before you can continue on with the application. Account creation is fast and easy -- you'll just need to provide a username, password, email address, and answers to two security questions.
Personal information
The first portion of the application is designed to collect your personal information. You'll need to provide your name, address, phone number, birthdate, social security number, and other basic pieces of information. You will also be asked to provide your work history and education, so taking some time to prepare that information beforehand can greatly speed up the application process. You will also have the opportunity to provide some references. References can be personal, academic, or professional, and you will have to provide at least one to continue on with the application.
Assessment
Once you've completed the core of the application process, you will have to complete an assessment. The assessment is designed to help Petco determine if you would make a good fit for their company. Unfortunately, the assessment is painfully long. It's twelve pages long, with twenty questions on each page (yes, that's well over 200 questions). To make matters worse, the assessment is timed, so you won't be able to take a break to clear your head and come back. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to get around the assessment.
Tips for Assessment Test
If a question has you stumped, think about what the employer is trying to learn about you by asking the question. Also, you should do your best to always give strong answers. For example, someone who would 'definitely' stop to help a customer is a lot more appealing than someone who 'might' stop to help a customer. To give you an idea of what to expect from the assessment, here are a few example questions: "In order to make a decision at work, you have to compare every possible solution." "Coworkers would describe me as being obedient." "Smart employers are willing to take risks in implementing innovative policies."
Background check
If you read the fine print at the beginning of the application, you'll learn that you are giving Petco permission to perform a background check. They will look at your criminal history, as well as your work, education, and address to confirm that it matches what you list on your application. So make sure that you're as honest and accurate as possible.

How To Get Updates on Your Petco Job Application

Unfortunately, Petco does not provide automatic updates on job applications at this time. If you want to learn if you're still being considered for a position, you'll need to pick up the phone and call the hiring manager.

History
Petco got its start in 1965, when Walter Evans opened a veterinary supply store. The business was called UPCO, and its model was slightly different than it is now. Rather than selling products to the general public, he sold supplies to veterinarians and other animal professionals. For the first 14 years, the store appealed primarily to ranches, kennels, and other similar organizations. In 1979, UPCO changed it's named to Petco, and shifted its focus towards pet supplies. By 1988, there were more than 130 Petco locations, primarily on the west coast. By 1994, Petco was the largest specialty pet retailer in the country, with more than 215 stores in 13 states. Today, there are more than 1,150 Petco stores spread across all fifty states.
