Apply in-store

If you don't have reliable internet access or would rather apply in-person, Nordstrom has kiosks in every store that you can use to apply. The application process is exactly the same as it is online, but walking into a store can be a great way to make a personal connection that may help you get the job you're after.

The Nordstrom Application Process

Department stores are known for having very long job applications. Thankfully, Nordstrom's application is shorter than most. From start to finish, you should expect to spend between 30-50 minutes on the application depending on how quickly you type and how well prepared you are before you begin.

For the sake of this application guide, we applied to a position in retail sales. Your application experience may vary a little bit depending on the type of position that you apply for.

Before you can fill out the Nordstrom application, you will need to create an account on their hiring site. Creating an account is simple, and will only take a minute of your time. To register, you will need to provide a username, a password, your email address, and an answer to an account security question.

Once your account is created, you can begin the application itself. At this point, you will be asked up upload a resume. Uploading your resume is optional, but doing so can be a big time-saver. Nordstrom's hiring site will parse through your resume, and use the information it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. If you don't want to upload your resume at this point, that's ok -- you can enter all of your information manually.

During the Nordstrom application, you will be asked to provide the following pieces of information: your name, address, phone number, email address, employment history, and education. Make sure that you have all of this information before you begin the application (including accurate employment and education dates). Not only will having everything prepared before you begin help you get through the application more quickly, it will also ensure that you don't get stuck and have your application time out as a result.

At the end of the application, you will have the opportunity to upload your resume and cover letter. If you have these documents prepared, you should definitely take advantage of the chance to provide them. Standing out on a job application can be very difficult, and providing these documents will help you demonstrate exactly how your skills and experiences have prepared you for the position that you're applying for. Providing your cover letter and resume is not required, but you may find that it will be hard to get a call back without them.

Assessment

With the core of the application out of the way, it's time to begin the assessment. The assessment is a series of questions that are designed to help Nordstrom determine if you would make a good addition to their team.

Compared to most assessments, the Nordstrom assessment is pretty short (48 questions). To give you an idea of what you can expect from the assessment, here are a couple example questions:

"How often do you take chances or shortcuts?"

"Relative to your co-workers or classmates, how would you assess your competence level?"

You should always be honest during the assessment, but don't shy away from giving strong answers. Remember, Nordstrom is asking these questions because they want to learn about you. And they will learn a lot more if you would 'definitely' as opposed to 'maybe' doing something. So be strong in your convictions, and stay away from neutral or weak answers when you feel comfortable doing so.

Background check

During the application, you will need to consent to a background check. Any employment offer that you receive will be contingent upon passing this background check.
