History

Eddie Bauer opened his first store 1920, when he was only 21. It was located in Seattle, Washington, and was called "Eddie Bauer's Tennis Shop." At the time, he specialized in repairing and building tennis rackets. Over time, he expanded the scope of the shop to include equipment from some of his other interests as well -- specifically, golf clubs and fishing tackle. As the scope of the store grew, he decided to rename his store to "Eddie Bauer's Sport Shop."

Bauer continued to offer more types of merchandise at his store, and by 1940 he was selling men's and women's outdoor gear as well. In 1945 he started the first mail-order catalog, and it was so successful that he closed his retail locations to focus his efforts on the catalog.

Today, there are more than 370 Eddie Bauer stores. The company continues to operate its mail order business. Worldwide, more than 10,000 people are employed by Eddie Bauer.
