Paper Applications
Many McDonald’s restaurants are independently owned and operated, so the hiring process can vary from location to location. Depending on the location where you’d like to apply, it may be possible to walk into a store and fill out a paper application. If that’s the method you’d prefer, we’d recommend calling ahead to make sure it’s an available option before making the trip.

The McDonald’s Application Process

The McDonald’s job application is fairly long, and you should expect to spend between 30 – 45 minutes filling it out. Before you start, make sure that you will have enough time to complete it in a single sitting. If you go 20 minutes without taking an action, your application will time out and you will have to start over again from the beginning. It would be nice if you could save your progress as you go like you can with many other employers, but unfortunately, that isn't the case. As another tip, the layout of the application is a little confusing at times, and it isn’t always clear what information is required and what information is optional. We’d recommend taking a little extra time to make sure that you’re always answering the question you think you’re answering, because with the layout they use, it’s really easy to get mixed up. When applying online, you are only able to apply to one position at one store at a time. It would be nice if you could apply to multiple locations, but unfortunately, that isn’t how it works – you’ll have to submit a completely new application for every location.
Application sections
The application is broken up into two major sections. In the first section, you will need to provide your personal information (name, address, date of birth, employment history, education, etc). Taking the time to prepare that information ahead of time can you start can speed up the process significantly. The second section of the application is the assessment, and we’ve written up a guide below to help you through it.
Assessment
The assessment is broken up into two parts. The first part is 35 questions, and the second part is 8 questions. From McDonald’s point of view, the goal of the assessment is to understand a little bit about who you are as a person, so they can try and determine if you’d be a good fit for their team. Here a couple examples to give you an idea of the type of questions you’re likely to be asked: “People say I can be counted on to do whatever it takes to get the job done.” “While you are working, you overhear a pair of coworkers on break. The two are talking about another team member because she works too slowly. What would you be MOST likely to do?” You’re then presented with five multiple choice answers, of which you should choose the one that most accurately reflects you. Be sure to answer carefully, and take a moment to consider what McDonald’s is trying to learn by answering that question. Providing ‘wrong’ answers can instantly disqualify you from consideration.
Drug Test
McDonald’s does not ask for your permission to perform a pre-employment drug screening. This doesn't necessarily mean that they won't request permission at a later date, though.
Background Check
McDonald’s does not ask for your permission to perform a pre-employment background check during the application process.

How to Get Updates on Your McDonald’s Application

McDonald’s does not provide automatic updates on your application status. Your best bet is to follow up with the hiring manager at the location you’ve applied to work at.

History
The first McDonald’s store was opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1940. The founders, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald, decided to open a restaurant that was focused on serving only a few items – fries, burgers, and drinks. Such a limited menu made it possible for them to serve the food quickly, while ensuring the uniformity and quality of each meal. When they needed to place an order for multi-mixers, they met with salesman Ray Kroc. Ray was so impressed with the operation that he went into business with the brothers, convincing them to expand across the country. In 1955, Kroc founded the McDonald’s corporation, and bought the rights to the name from the brothers in 1960. He continued to work for the company until the day he died in 1984. Today, there are more than 34,000 McDonald’s restaurants in more than 115 countries. Every day, they serve an average of 68 million customers.
