The UnitedHealth Application Process

For this application guide, we applied for an Associate Underwriter position. Though the application process is identical for all jobs as far as we can tell, it's possible that your experience may vary a little bit from ours depending on the position that you are applying for.

Before you can begin the UnitedHealth application process, you will be asked to watch an informational video that will explain the corporate values and culture at the company. You can close out the video at anytime, but if you aren't very familiar with the company, you might want to consider watching it. By learning about the core values, you will have some information that you can use on your cover letter.

After you watch the video (or choose not to), you will need to create an account on their hiring website. To create an account, you will need to provide a username, an account password, your email address, and answers to two security questions.

Once your account is created, you will have the opportunity to upload your resume. Uploading your resume is not required at this point, but providing it can help you complete the application more quickly. UnitedHealth will read through the resume and use the information that it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. While it did a great job with our resume, it would be a good idea to review all of the information it fills in for you before you submit your application. All programs like these are susceptible to errors from time to time. If you choose not to provide your resume at this point, that's ok. You can fill in your application manually.

Once your resume is uploaded (or not), you will need to provide some basic personal information including your name, street address, education, work experience, and licenses / certifications (if applicable)

After you enter your personal information, you will be required to complete a brief questionnaire. This questionnaire will ask you questions related to your eligibility to work in the United States (and for UnitedHealth), as well as a series of job-related questions. For example, we were asked about our proficiency with Microsoft Office products, our underwriting experience, and our education. Read each question carefully, and answer honestly.

Following the questionnaire, you will be asked to provide up to three professional references. This is optional at this point. If UnitedHealth is interested in you as a candidate, they will likely ask to see them again later on.

At this point in the application, you will have the opportunity to attach any supporting documents like your cover letter or resume. Even though their system does not technically require you to provide these documents, we highly recommend that you do so. Without them, your application will likely be considered incomplete and you may not be seriously considered for the job. Also, make sure that you take time to customize your resume and cover letter for the position that you are applying for. This will help to demonstrate legitimate interest, and will provide you with the opportunity to explain exactly how your skills and experiences have prepared you for the job.
