The Panera Bread Job Application Process

The Panera Bread application process is one of the longest and most unfriendly applications we've ever come across. Unless you really love Panera, have an in with a hiring manager, or desperately need any job, you might want to stay away -- you can easily fill out 3 other applications at other companies in the time it takes you to fill out this one. From start to finish, it will probably take you at least an hour to complete.
Getting started
To start out, you'll need to enter your zip code and select how many miles you'd be willing to travel to work. This will bring up a list of stores in your area, and you can choose up to five at which you'd like to work. Being able to apply to so many stores at once is a great feature, and it's definitely appreciated. Unfortunately, you can only apply to one position at a time. So if, for example, you would like to work as either a day baker or an evening baker? That's too bad, you'll have to fill out two applications. Given the amount of time it takes to get through the Panera application process, that's a pretty frustrating limitation. But before you can actually start the application process, you'll need to create an account on their hiring site. Creating an account is simple. You will only need to provide your name, email, and social security number.
Questionnaire
Once your account is created, you will have to fill out a questionnaire. The questions are simple, and are designed to help you learn more about the position and the responsibilities you'll have on the job. To give you an idea of the types of questions you'll have to answer, here are a few examples: "Do you have prior educational training or work experience in the food service industry in a baker, pastry chef, cook, or other closely related position?" "Are you willing to work in a production-baking environment and bake products according to company specs?" "Are you able to work in a fast-paced environment that requires being on your feet for an extended period of time?"
Main application
With the questionnaire out of the way, only now will you be able to get to the meat of the application. You'll need to provide your name, address, phone number, and work history (you must provide at least one former employer here). You will also have the opportunity to provide up to three references (no family). If you have them, you should take advantage of the opportunity to provide them. But be prepared: you will need to provide an address and phone number for each reference.
Assessment
After the main part of the application is completed, you'll have to move on to the assessment. And what an assessment it is. We had to answer twelve pages with 20 questions each. Yes, that's over 200 questions. And yes, we think that's just a little overkill. The entire assessment is made up of questions like these: "Coworkers would describe me as someone who follows the rules." "I would enjoy working for a cutting-edge company, even if there is some risk involved." "Changing workplace procedures tends to be counterproductive." Though you should do your best to be honest, it's often glaringly obvious what the 'right' answer should be. And maybe that's the point -- to see if you can get a good enough read on someone to know how you're supposed to behave in the situation.
Drug test
Panera Bread will ask for your permission to administer a pre-employment drugtest. If you decline, you will not be able to complete the application.
