The Hess Application Process

For this application guide, we applied for a position as a Sr. Engineering Technician. Though the process is nearly identical for all positions, you might find that there are small differences between our application and experience and yours. In some cases, it will vary a little bit depending on the position that you are applying for.

Before you can begin the application, you will need to register on the Hess hiring site. To register, you will simply need to provide a username, account password, and an answer to a security question.

When you begin the application, you will be given the option to upload your resume. Uploading your resume is not required at this point, but it can be a great time-saver if you choose to provide it. Hess will read through your resume and use the information that it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. If you choose to upload your resume, make sure that you check all of the application fields that it fills in for you. Though it didn't make any mistakes in our experience, it's always possible that it could put the wrong information in the wrong field, and that could make a very bad impression. If you choose not to provide your resume at this point, that's ok -- you can enter in all of your personal information by hand later on.

On the next page, you will need to provide your cover letter and resume (this is different than the resume upload feature discussed in the paragraph above). Providing a cover letter is not required by their system, but we highly recommend that you prepare one. Also, you should take some time to customize both your resume and cover letter for the position that you are applying for. Taking the time to customize your documents will demonstrate a real interest in the position, while giving you the opportunity to demonstrate exactly how your previous experience have prepared you for the job.

Over the course of the application, you will need to provide various personal information including your name, street address, phone number, email address, work history, education, and any relevant certifications that you may have. Make sure that you take a little bit of time to prepare this information before you begin the application, or you may find yourself searching for documentation while your application times out.

After you enter all of your personal information, you will need to take a brief questionnaire. The questions will be centered around your eligibility to work in the United States, your criminal history (if applicable), and job-specific questions that are designed to make sure that you meet the minimum requirements for the position you're applying for.

Background check and drug test

During the application, you will need to consent to a pre-employment background check and drug test. Any employment offer that you receive will be contingent on passing both of these tests.
