The Best Buy Application Process

Before you can apply for a job at Best Buy, you will have to identify a job opening that you're interested in and create an account on their hiring site. Creating an account is simple, and requires only your email address, a password, your name, and your most recent employment information.

Note: For the sake of this application guide, we applied for a cashier position. Your experience may vary a little bit depending on the position you choose to apply for.

The core of the Best Buy application is designed to collect your personal information. You will need to provide your social security number, name, phone number, email address, availability, scheduling preferences, birthday, work experience, references, and education. Make sure that you have accurate dates for your education and employment histories, as these are among the things that Best Buy will verify when they run a background check.

Assessment

At this point in the application process, you will be required to complete an assessment. The assessment is a series of 50 questions that are designed to help Best Buy determine if you would be a good fit for their team.

The assessment will most likely take you about 30 minutes to complete, but you can spend up to 75 minutes on it if you need to. To give you an idea of what you can expect from the assessment, here are a few sample questions:

"In your current or previous job(s), education, or other similar experiences, how have you solved a difficult problem?"

"How would your current or previous supervisors, teachers, or coworkers rate your teamwork?"

"Which of the following would be the MOST effective way to deal with a team member who is not doing his or her share of the work?"

If you haven't taken an assessment before, it might feel like some of the questions are trick questions. They aren't. However, there are a couple things that you can do to give yourself the best chance of passing the assessment.

1. Give strong answers. For example, saying 'I would almost always do something' is a whole lot better than 'I don't know what I would do.' Remember, they require the assessment because they want to learn about you. Neutral answers won't tell them a whole lot.

2. Put yourself in their shoes. Sometimes, assessment questions can be a little bit ambiguous, and how you would react to a situation would depend on the circumstances. If you're not quite sure how to answer a question, take a moment to think about why they've decided to ask it. What are they trying to learn about you?

How long does Best Buy keep applications on file?

Background check

During the application process, you will be asked to consent to a pre-employment background check. If you do not agree to the background check, you will be unable to complete the application.

Drug Test

Best Buy screens all employees for the presence of drugs or alcohol. By completing the job application, you are consenting to a drug screening. Any employment offer you receive is contingent upon passing the drug test.

Business Summary

Leadership

Hubert Joly is the CEO of Best Buy, and Hatim Tiyabi is the Chairman.

Finances

Best Buy is a publicly traded company (NYSE: BBY). In 2012 they reported $50.7 billion in revenue, $1.08 billion in operating income, $1.2 billion in net income, $16 billion in assets, and $3.7 billion in equity.

History

Before there was Best Buy, Richard Schulze and Gary Smoliak opened Sound of Music, which was a store that specialized in selling audio equipment (first opened in 1966). They were successful very quickly, and by 1969 Sound of Music was a publicly traded company.

In an interesting case of luck, one of their stores was hit by a tornado in 1981. Because of the damage to the building and the need to clear out their inventory quickly, they held a tornado sale that they promoted as 'Best Buy.' In 1983 they adopted the Best Buy name, and expanded the store's offerings to include a greater range of consumer electronics products. By 1992, they hit $1 billion in annual revenue.

Best Buy has continued to expand, and today it is the largest retailer of consumer electronic goods in the United States. Today there are more than 1,100 Best Buy stores, and the company employs more than 167,000 people.
