The General Motors Application Process

General Motors has one of the most applicant-friendly applications that we've seen. If you already have your resume and cover letter prepared, you should easily be able to complete the application in 30 minutes or less.

For the sake of this application guide, we applied for a job as an Electrical Technician. Your application experience may vary a little bit depending on the position that you are applying for, but the majority of the process will remain the same regardless of position.

Before you can apply for a job at General Motors, you will need to create an account on their hiring website. To create your account, you will need to provide your email address, name, phone number, current employer, current title, and interest level (passive or active).

Once your account is created, you will have the opportunity to upload your resume. Providing your resume at this point in the application is optional, but doing so can save you a lot of time. General Motors will parse through your application and use the information that it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. This will save you a lot of data entry time, but don't forget to read over everything they fill out. While we did not have any problems with our upload, it's possible that their program could make a mistake and enter the wrong data in the wrong field. It would be unfortunate to miss out on an opportunity because of a mistake their program made, so check behind it very carefully.

Over the course of the application, you will need to provide many different pieces of personal information including your name, address, phone number, veteran status, education, and work experience. Before you start the application, you should take a few moments to make sure that you have all of the information that you will need (including accurate employment and education dates). There are few things more frustrating than getting halfway through an application before realizing that you're missing a critical piece of information and finding yourself unable to complete it.

After you provide your personal information, you will have the opportunity to provide your cover letter and resume. While these are technically optional (meaning that their system will let you through without them), you should treat them like they are required. Without these documents, General Motors will have very little information to go on while deciding if they want to bring you in for an interview. Additionally, you should take some time to customize your cover letter and resume for the position that you are applying for. This will help you demonstrate your interest in the company, and will give you the opportunity to demonstrate how your previous experiences have prepared you for the position that you are applying for.

Background check and drug test

During the application process, you will need to consent to a pre-employment background check and drug test. Any employment offer that you receive will be contingent upon passing these tests.
