If you do choose to apply through their site instead of ours, don't forget to come back to StartWire and tell us about your application so we can help you maintain an accurate record of where and when you have applied. Studies have shown that keeping your job search organized is one of the most important factors when it comes to getting a job. We'll provide you with the tools you need to do that.

The IBM Application Process

For this application guide, we applied for a position as a web developer. Though all applications are very similar, it's possible that yours could be a little bit different depending on the position that you apply for.

Before you can fill out the online application, you will need to register on IBM's hiring website. To register, you will need to provide your name, email address, an account password, and answers to two security questions.

Once your account is created, you will be able to begin the application. When you start, you will have the option to connect your application to your LinkedIn or Facebook accounts. This is entirely optional, so it's ok if you aren't comfortable making the social connection. However, if you do choose to use your social accounts, IBM will pull in your account information and use it to fill in many of the application fields for you. This can be a great time-saving feature, and it's worth trying if you are comfortable with the idea.

During the application, you will be required to provide many different pieces of personal information including your name, home address, email address, phone number, education summary, work history, job qualifications, travel and relocation preferences, and languages spoken. Before you begin the application, you should make sure that you have all of this information on hand (including accurate employment and education dates). Before IBM makes a job offer, they will very likely verify the dates with your school and your employer. Providing inaccurate dates can slow down (or completely halt) the hiring process, so make sure that you take some time to verify those.

You will also be asked some job-specific questions that will be used to gauge your eligibility for the position. For example, on our Web Developer application, we were asked about our proficiency with PHP, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and other common web languages.

At the end of the application, you will have the opportunity to provide your resume and cover letter. If you haven't already, you will want to customize both documents for IBM and the position that you are applying for. This is your opportunity to explain how your previous experiences have prepared you for the job you want, and why you are passionate about working for IBM.

How to Get Updates on Your IBM Application

IBM does not provide automatic application updates at this time. If you have already applied for a job and would like to find out where you stand, you will need to contact human resources directly. However, contacting them can be a very hit or miss process. Don't make a pest of yourself, and don't get discouraged if you don't hear back. Even though it's hard to do, maintaining a positive attitude is so important.
