7-Eleven is a subsidiary of Seven & I Holdings Co, a Japanese retail group. Seven & I Holdings Co is a publicly traded company (TYO: 3382). In 2012 they reported approximately $49 billion in revenue.
The first 7-Eleven was opened in 1927, when John Jefferson Green opened a store that sold milk and eggs. It was there that he and a manager realized that selling items like bread and milk could be a very profitable idea, as customers didn’t have to travel all the way to a grocery store to make their purchases.
In 1946, they changed the name of the store to 7-Eleven, to reflect the hours of operation (7am – 11pm).Today, we’re used to the convenience of stores being open during those hours, but at the time, it was an unprecedented move.
By 1952, there were more than 100 7-Eleven stores. The company continued to expand, but ran into financial trouble during the 80s. The company has since changed hands multiple times, most recently being purchased by Seven & I Holdings Co. in 1991.
