The Capital One Application Process

For this application guide, we applied for a position as a Mortgage Loan Specialist. While most Capital One applications will be identical to the one that we filled out, you may find that yours is a little bit different depending on the position that you applied for.

Before you can fill out the Capital One job application, you will need to register on their hiring website. To register, you will need to provide your username, an account password, and your email address.

After your account is created, you will have the option to upload your resume. Uploading your resume is not required at this point, but providing it can save you a lot of time. When you upload your resume, Capital One will read through it and use the information that it finds to fill in many of the application fields for you. If you do choose to upload it, make sure that you doublecheck everything that it fills in for you. While their program did a great job with our resume, every program be susceptible to errors. If you don't want to provide your resume at this point, that's ok. You can fill in the application manually.

Once you upload your resume (or don't), you will need to provide some personal information including your name, email address, home address, race, ethnicity, gender, veteran status, primary language spoken, education, and work experience (including start and end dates, your supervisor's name, phone number, and email address). The personal information required is much more...well...personal than most of Capital One's competitors. If you are not comfortable providing it, then there may be some other options out there for you with other companies.

Once you provide your personal information, you will need to take a questionnaire (unfortunately, you have to enter your social security number before you can get started). The questionnaire is rather long, and is mostly concerned about your eligibility to work in the United States, your criminal record, your shift preferences, and your desired (and current) salary.

You will also be asked many (in our case, over 70) questions about your experiences performing many types of tasks. For example, we were asked how much experience we had filing documents, and ordering supplies. To be perfectly honest, some of these questions came across as a little silly, as many of the 'skills' that are asked about are either common sense or can be taught in a matter of minutes.

After you get through the long series of questions, you will have the opportunity to upload your resume and cover letter. If you made it this far in the application, you will definitely want to take advantage of the opportunity. Also, make sure that you customize both your resume and your cover letter for the position that you would like to apply for. This will give you the chance to demonstrate your genuine interest the job, and explain how your previous experiences make you a great candidate.

Background check and drug test

When you submit your application, you are consenting to a pre-employment background check and drug test. Any employment offer you receive is contingent upon passing these tests.
